Gaerwen on Anglesey is approx four miles north of Llanfair PG. Gaerwen itself is a real juxtaposition of old and new. There are two disused windmills to the north and a new industrial estate to the south-west. The most famous historical aspect of Gaerwen is that it was home to the southernmost start of the Anglesey central railway line ˆ continuously in use from 1864 until 1993. Many visitors to this part of Anglesey choose to explore the narrow country lanes in search of archaeological treasures ˆ one site of these is Bryn Celli Ddu; a magnificent example of a Bronze Age passage grave located quite close to Plas Newydd - historic home of the Marquess of Anglesey. This fine mansion house just two miles from Gaerwen contains significant works by the artist Rex Whistler but also houses a military museum and boasts impressive gardens in a range of styles. It is easy to spend a whole day walking here but you might take to the sea as boat trips on the Menai Straits can easily be arranged. If you prefer to see marine life from the safety of an indoor arena then the Anglesey Sea Zoo is only three miles away.
