Located between Leamington Spa and Daventry on the A425, Southam is a small market town in the Stratford-on-Avon district of Warwickshire. It is also conveniently situated for many routes, including easy access to the M40 motorway. Southam is located on the River Stowe which flows from Napton-on-the-Hill and joins the Warwickshire River Itchen just outside of the town, which in turn flows into the River Leam. Southam and its "Halliwell" (or Holy Well) was first mentioned in 998 when it was granted to the Priory of Coventry by King Ethelred. Mentioned as 'Suham' in the Domesday Book, Southam was granted a charter in the 13th Century when St. James' church was built. In 1227 the Prior obtained a statute allowing Southam a weekly market. The water from the Holy Well was said to cure eye ailments. The dominant rock type for the area is blue lias clay. Hence until quite recently there was a medium sized cement factory with associated quarrying a mile north of the town. This works was served by both rail and canal transport - the latter being a short arm from the Grand Union Canal. Cement production was halted in the late 1990s. However, quarrying at the site continues.
