Ballygrant is a small village on the Hebridean isle of Islay lying off the west coast of Argyll in Scotland; Ballygrant is situated three miles from the ferry terminal at Port Askaig. Ballygrant is a popular tourist location with shops, holiday accommodation and places to eat. Attractions include the Ballygrant Loch, with brown trout fishing and scenic walks. The Islay Woollen Mill has a visitor centre with traditionally made tartans and tweeds; the mill provided the tartans used in the film 'Braveheart'. Islay Ales is at nearby Bridgend with a range of traditionally brewed cask and bottled real ales. Islay has many historical and archeologically interesting features; the visitor centre at Finlaggan has details of Islays importance as the seat of Lord of the Isles during the middle-ages and Dun Nosebridge is an Iron Age Broch overlooking the Laggan River. The isle is abundant with wildlife; there are deer stalking photographic tours around Gearoch Forest and the RSPB reserve is at Loch Gruinart. The 18-hole Machrie golf course lies along the shore of Loch Indaal. Pony trekking and cycle hire are also available locally. Islay is famous for its malt whiskey production and has seven distilleries in operation, the Islay Festival of Malt and Music is held from May to June each year with tours, tasting and Ceilidhs.
