Gorey, a lively market town in north Wexford, effortlessly combines a charming, old-time atmosphere with the rapid growth that has accompanied an influx of commuters. With Dublin only an hour's drive away, many families have left the city for the gentler atmosphere of Gorey with its quaint, listed shops, historic buildings such as the 18th Century Market House, and impressive churches, including the Pugin-designed St Michael's. Gorey is overlooked by the dramatic Tara Hill, whose summit offers fabulous views over the east Wexford coast, and it's just a short drive to a string of small seaside towns with inviting golden beaches. Gorey has a golf course as well as fishing opportunities in the nearby Ounavarra river and riding at the Ballycanew equestrian centre, five miles away. It also provides a good range of shops, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs, and there are regular performances by the local theatre and musical societies.
