The riverside heritage town of Lismore, nestling at the foot of the Knockmealdown Mountains, is one of west Waterford's most picturesque and fascinating places. Lismore originated as a monastic settlement, established in the 7th Century by St Carthage, and its long, colourful past is brought vividly to life at the Heritage Centre. The town has two much-loved landmarks. One is the imposing St Carthage's Cathedral, whose tall, elegant spire can be seen from all around. The other is Lismore Castle, a magnificent building that dates back to the 12th Century and has since been restored and extended. The castle is privately occupied, although its wonderful Jacobean gardens are open to visitors. Only a short drive from Lismore, Cappoquin House and Tourin House, both with beautiful gardens, are well worth seeing. Lismore's creative aspects are part of its appeal. There are various local crafts to admire, as well as regular literary and theatrical events, and traditional music and dancing shows. The scenic countryside surrounding Lismore is ideal for outdoor activities, with fishing for salmon and brown trout in the river Blackwater, a choice of golf courses, horse-riding, and some hugely inspiring walks.
