Clonmel, in south Tipperary, is a very attractive riverside town overlooked by hills and mountains - the Comeraghs and the brooding Slievenamon. The county's largest town, Clonmel is a hive of activity, with an array of shops, pubs and restaurants as well as arts, theatre and festivals, but it also retains an atmosphere of great historic dignity. The local heritage tour guides visitors around Clonmel's fascinating sights, including a remnant of the original town walls, an ancient Franciscan friary, a reconstructed arch called The West Gate and two courthouses: The Main Guard, dating from the 17th Century, and today's court building, constructed in 1802. The County Museum and the Museum of Transport are well worth a look. Just outside Clonmel, the holy St Patrick's Well, situated beside a ruined church and celtic cross, attracts many pilgrims. Clonmel has a riverside park, the Richard Mulcahy Town Park, which includes a pinetum, some lovely walks along the Suir and a spectacular poppy field. A short distance to the east, The Wilderness Gorge is an area of remarkable beauty and a sanctuary for wildlife and plants. Popular sports include fishing (especially for salmon), golf, walking, cycling, horse and greyhound racing, hill-walking and mountaineering.
