The bustling Heritage town of Trim enjoys a beautiful location on the river Boyne where it's dominated by the magnificent stone castle that was used as a location in the film 'Braveheart'. Trim Castle, partly restored and open to the public, dates back to the 12th Century, and it's said to be the biggest and best Anglo-Norman castle in the country. Beside it, Trim Visitor Centre dramatically illustrates the history of the castle as well as the town's many other medieval ruins. Some notable sights include Sheep's Gate, the last remaining gate from the 13th Century town walls, and the unmistakeable outline of The Yellow Steeple, a 14th Century belfry tower that's visible from miles around. Also on the heritage trail are the 15th Century St Patrick's Cathedral and surviving remnants from the 13th Century St Peter & Paul Cathedral. For all its historic significance, today's Trim is a successful market town with good shopping, charming local crafts, friendly pubs and restaurants, and delightful river walks along the Boyne. Outdoor activities enjoyed locally include angling, golf and cycling. Trim residents also look forward to several annual events: the June haymaking festival, the classic car show in July, and the September agricultural show.
