Kells is an engaging market town in the north of County Meath. It's rich in history, filled with ruins and monuments dating back more than 1,000 years to a monastic past. A Heritage town, Kells has a walking tour guiding guests round numerous medieval attractions. The most famous relic is The Book Of Kells, a magnificently illustrated text that now resides in Trinity College, Dublin. Three detailed reproductions are displayed in Kells. One is in St Columba's Church, built in 1778 on the site of a medieval church, whose bell tower still exists. There are several fascinating sights to see in the church grounds, including a round tower and the remains of four Celtic crosses, all thought to be of 11th Century origin, and a 12th Century oratory. A fifth high cross stands outside Kells Heritage Centre, housed in the town's former courthouse. Other features include the 18th Century Tower of Loyd, the Paupers' Grave and, several miles out of town, Teltown Earthworks, a ring fort. More contemporary activities in Kells include motorbike racing, golf, fishing, riding, hunting and a series of annual, fun-filled family festivals. Visitors should make time to see the blissful Grove Gardens, with their tropical bird sanctuary and mini-zoo.
