Ballina is a large town in the north east of Co Mayo. It's situated at the mouth of the River Moy, which is renowned for exceptionally good salmon fishing. This brings many visitors to the town, and those who happen to be around in July are comprehensively entertained by the annual ten-day Ballina Salmon Festival. It brings the community together in a colourful programme of singing, dancing, arts, crafts and culture, culminating in a fireworks display. Ballina is a lively town with excellent shopping in major chains and fascinating small specialist shops. There are some fine restaurants, and a range of welcoming pubs where customers may enjoy traditional Irish music, live bands or discos. The Ballina Arts Centre, meanwhile, has been operating in temporary premises while upgrading its building to include exciting new facilities, and the Clarke Museum, housed in a former bank, exhibits an absorbing collection of local documents and memorabilia. Ballina boasts several unforgettable landmarks, from its two traffic bridges and its new, fishing-rod-shaped pedestrian bridge to the Humbert Monument (a statue depicting Mother Ireland) and the towering spire of St Muredach's Cathedral. Interesting historical sights include the Dolmen of the Four Maols, the ruins of the 15th Century Moyne Abbey, and the town's many listed buildings.
