Limerick is a modern, exciting city which retains a very attractive historic character. Located on the Atlantic coastline, this is where the River Shannon meets the ocean. At the south end of Thomond Bridge, one of the river crossings, stands the magnificent King John's Castle, a 13th Century Norman fortress. Even older is St Mary's Cathedral, which was built in the 1100s. Another great city landmark is the Treaty Stone, a slab of limestone commemorating the 1691 Treaty of Limerick. Numerous walking tours guide visitors around the sights, although anyone taking the 'Angela's Ashes' tour should not expect to encounter the grinding poverty described by author Frank McCourt. Today's Limerick is a shopper's paradise, with purpose- built centres, high street stores, small shops and a daily market catering for every taste. Culture vultures will also be happy here, exploring a wide variety of museums, galleries, concert halls and arts festivals, while night owls are spoilt for choice, with pubs, clubs and restaurants galore. Sports venues include a greyhound stadium and a race course. Also in the great outdoors, Cratloe Woods offer fun trails and an obstacle course. Limerick is just twenty minutes' drive from Shannon airport, across the border in County Clare.
