The picturesque village of Ballingarry is located in west Limerick amid lush green fields and winding country roads lined with old stone walls. Romantic cottages and grand, historic houses fit beautifully into this tranquil landscape, overlooked by the mysterious Hill of Knockfierna, which is rich in folklore. Fascinating, too, are the ruins of the ancient Ballingarry Castle in the village itself. At one time, Ballingarry was a prosperous weaving and linen centre, but its industry - and population - were badly hit by the Great Famine, beginning in 1845. Today, it welcomes visitors seeking a relaxing break in scenic surroundings with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, including golf, fishing, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting, with go-karting available just a short distance away at Kilcornan. Another great attraction at Ballingarry is Echo Lodge, an elegant country house hotel whose gourmet restaurant, The Mustard Seed, tempts diners from far and wide. A few miles away, the charming thatched village of Adare is well worth visiting. Drivers venturing further afield are well placed to explore the city of Limerick, where the river Shannon flows into the Atlantic, the mountains and woodlands of east Limerick's Golden Vale, and the world-famous sights of neighbouring County Kerry.
