Adare is an idyllic Limerick village, often described as the prettiest in Ireland. Charming thatched cottages, historic ruins and beautiful greenery captivate all those who pass through the village, which is located on the River Maigue, just over half an hour's drive from Shannon Airport. The cheery main street is filled with colourfully painted houses and shops, contrasting with the quaint cottages and, elsewhere in the village, the romantic old buildings that make this such a popular setting for weddings. The scenic ruins of the 13th Century Desmond Castle, on the banks of the Maigue, are being renovated in parts, and supervised tours are available. Other notable sights include a fine Augustinian abbey founded in the 14th Century, a restored 13th Century Trinitarian abbey, and the ruins of a Franciscan friary. They are seen in the centre of the Adare Manor golf course, which itself is wonderfully situated beside Desmond castle. Adare Manor, meanwhile, is a splendid Tudor mansion now open as a luxury hotel, with magnificent grounds including lakes and another golf course. The village history is exhibited at the Heritage Centre, which also houses lovely craft shops. Opposite is a one-time washing pool and a delightful park. Local sports centre on golf, horse-riding and fishing.
