Tralee - Kerry's county town - is most famous for its annual Rose of Tralee festival. More than a simple beauty pageant, the event has evolved into a week-long summer carnival with street entertainment, fireworks, concerts, fashion shows and other exciting indoor events. The competition itself is open to women of Irish descent living all over the world, with the winner chosen on the basis of exceptional personal qualities rather than looks. In another claim to fame, Tralee has a long tradition of horse-racing. Located at the head of Tralee Bay and sheltered by the majestic Slieve Mish mountains, the town offers golden sands, a host of family attractions and excellent shopping in the quaint alleyways of yesteryear and in contemporary, purpose-built centres. It's also an ideal base for exploring the breathtaking sights of the Dingle Peninsula, the Ring of Kerry and the Lakes of Killarney. Tralee, a market town, has something for everyone, from golf to fishing, from the County Museum to the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, from the Siamsa Tire folk theatre to the steam railway and the 200-year-old Blennerville Windmill. For children, there are good times galore at the Aqua Dome waterworld and the indoor Toby World fun palace.
