Plungar is a small rural village in Leicestershire. Due to its proximity to the border of Nottinghamshire and the variability of county borders, it is often mistakenly thought of as being a Nottinghamshire village. It lies in a triangle between Nottingham, Grantham and Melton Mowbray, about three miles south of the A52. It is part of Barkestone, Plungar and Redmile parish council, the three villages having an adult population of only 650 between them. Situated within the Melton District of Leicestershire, Plungar is situated in the picturesque Vale of Belvoir. The Vale of Belvoir is dominated by Belvoir Castle, perched on a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding area. Belvoir Castle is open to visitors. The Vale of Belvoir is also the home of Stilton Cheese, considered by some to be the 'King of English Cheese'. There is only one pub in the village itself, The Anchor, which is just a short distance from a restored Grantham Canal. Local tales say that a building was originally planned at the canal side which was to become The Anchor pub. Instead it was decided to convert a row of four terraced houses to make the pub, but keep the name. The chosen houses date back to 1774.
