Ollerton is an interesting town positioned on the banks of the Maun River, between Boughton and Edwinstowe in the county of Nottinghamshire. It nudges the edge of the ancient historic Sherwood Forest which was once home to Robin Hood and his merry men. The town dates far back in history, and has delightful 18th Century Coaching Inns which still welcomes visitors today, just as in times past, as the town is positioned at the crossing point of two ancient Highways. Coal Mining played an important role employing many of the townsfolk across the years, and although the mines are now closed the legacy lives on. Today's visitors can enjoy the good choice of shops on offer, and an impressive retail park close by, or there is always the colourful weekly market whose stalls line up to tempt the hardiest of shoppers. Artists will have a chance to capture the charming 18th Century Watermill set near the banks of the Maun River, or the church which stands nearby. Attractive countryside surrounds the town where walkers can enjoy the footpaths, and the Hops still grown today which links with the town's agricultural past. There is a good choice of comfortable B&B's and pleasant hotels for those visitors who are tempted to linger in this pleasing spot.
