Edwinstowe is an historical village in the County of Nottinghamshire, and is home to over five thousand people. It's set at the very heart of Sherwood Forest and has its roots firmly in the history books, and grew with the demise of a king. Edwin of Northumbria died close by after a bloody battle, and in order for his body not to fall into enemy hands he was buried here. His friends returned at a later date to him being proclaimed as Saint Edwin, the church and priest were firmly installed and the village grew. Its intriguing history continued with Robin Hood and his Merry Men who, it is said gathered at the Major Oak. This stunning tree dates back a thousand years and visitors today can still marvel at the tree which also saw a gathering of Suffragettes hide inside it. There is an interesting High Street with unusual shops, restaurants, and attractive pubs offering something a little stronger, and a Visitor's Centre for the Forest. From trees for great ships, nearby coal mining, and tourism today, the village thrives. A stroll to the Library will uncover a statue of Robin Hood proposing to Maid Marian, and close by the impressive 12th Century Church is where legend has it that they were married in the doorway.
