East Retford is a market town in the historic English county of Nottinghamshire. It stands on the eastern banks of the River Idle, which feeds the River Trent. Consensus of opinion is that the name (originally Redforde) comes from the reddish colour of the water in the river due to people and livestock crossing regularly and disturbing the red clay of the riverbed. East Retford is close to the A1 and has access, via the A57, to many other major cities in the area. The borough of East Retford received its first charter in 1246, making it likely that a church existed before the first record of a church, which comes from 1258. The present church of St Swithuns was first built in the 14th century and some of these early parts survive, some still with the original painted decoration. The remainder of the church was mostly built in the 15th century, although the tower had to be rebuilt in the 17th century after it had collapsed in a storm in 1651. Retford has two theatres you can enjoy; The Majestic Theatre hosts the more famous actors and shows, whilst you can enjoy shows by the Retford Little Theatre Amateur Drama Group at the Retford Little Theatre.
