Calverton is a village in Nottinghamshire, situated about eight miles north east of Nottingham. The name Calverton means 'calf enclosure', suggesting that in the early days the village was built on the cattle trade. Originally a very small village, Calverton grew with the advent of coal mining in the area. Calverton Colliery was opened in 1953 and was the main employer in the village until about the 1990's. British Coal closed the mine in 1994 but it reopened soon afterwards under private ownership. By the time the colliery finally closed in 1999, it was no longer the main employer in the village. Perhaps Calverton's biggest claim to fame is that the first knitting machine, The Stocking Frame, was invented there by Reverend William Lee in 1589. For many years the village became a centre for handframe knitting and many of the older village cottages have especially wide windows to ensure sufficient light for the use of the machine. A number of these cottages have been acquired and restored by the Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust. Calverton Museum is a small museum showing examples of hand frames and other antiquities. The badge used by Calverton parish council has central motif from a Norman Carving dated about 1120, showing St Wilfrid, patron of Calverton and Bishop of York.
