Situated in the northern part of the English county of Nottinghamshire, Blyth is just to the north west of Retford. It is very close to the point where the A1 becomes the A1(M), giving easy access to all parts of the country. The area was known to have been populated in Roman times, evidence of a Roman camp having been found nearby. Blyth boasts one of the oldest examples of Norman architecture in the country in its priory church of St. Mary and St. Martin. It was part of a Benedictine monastery founded in 1088. It was originally founded by one of William the Conqueror's followers, Roger de Builli. Blyth Hall was built at the eastern end of the church, but demolished in 1972. A seven hundred year old doorway lies in an adjacent stone building, said to have been built by the Knight's Hospitillar of St John of Jerusalem. There is a 15th century wall painting depicting the Doom (Apocalypse), this incredibly detailed work is the only one of its kind yet found in Nottinghamshire. The Angel Inn in the High Street in Blyth is open for Real Ales should you be in need of refreshment during your visit
