The Nottinghamshire town of Bingham sits on the northern edge of the Vale of Belvoir, with Nottingham to the west and Newark north-east both roughly nine miles distant. Nowadays it functions as a dormitory town for Nottingham, easily accessed via the A52 and by rail, though both those routes also open up Grantham to the east; as the A46 which passes Bingham brings Leicester and Newark within commuting reach. With a population of around 9000 (likely to go beyond 10000 shortly) Bingham enjoys good civic amenities including schools from infants to secondary, a library, and sports centre with pool. Its retail facilities serve residents of the town and surrounding villages like Saxondale and Tithby, and include a Thursday market which was revived after many decades dormancy in 1975; a farmers’ market on the first Saturday of the month; and numerous pubs. Bingham featured in the Domesday Book, already a reasonable settlement of around 250 souls; it remained an agricultural centre until framework-knitting briefly became a major employer in the early Industrial Revolution. The town expanded greatly in the post-war housing boom; and is once more slated to grow significantly with a new estate being developed. As so often is the case the most notable building here is the parish church, in Bingham a 13th century structure dedicated to St Mary and All Saints.
