Portumna is a scenic waterside town located in the south-east corner of County Galway - next to the border with Tipperary, where the river Shannon flows into the northern end of Lough Derg. Unsurprisingly, Portumna is a great fishing town, with several especially productive spots to be found along the river and the shores of the lough. Pike, perch, bream and roach are among the most common catches. Boating, water-skiing and wakeboarding are also popular around these parts, and learners can take lessons in watersports such as sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. Other sports offered in the local area include horse-riding, paintball and golf, with an 18-hole parkland course (complete with herds of deer) contained within the beautiful Portumna Forest Park. Set on the shores of Lough Derg, the forest park includes hundreds of acres of mixed woodlands, fields, open spaces and water, all of which provide homes for many species of wildlife. Visitors to Portumna will enjoy the celebrated three-hour drive around Lough Derg and the host of pretty villages that surround it. Closer to home, attractions include the 17th Century Portumna Castle - really a semi-fortified grand house - and its gardens. Nearby, the ruins of a Dominican priory are also worth exploring.
