Oughterard is a beautiful village overlooked by the mountains of Connemara. Situated on the banks of the picturesque Owenriff River which flows into the nearby Lough Corrib, Oughterard is renowned for its scenery. Visitors may enjoy a stroll along the riverside or around the streets with their gaily-painted shop fronts and friendly, historic charm. The village is an ideal base for hikers, bikers and climbers since it's convenient to Connemara's magnificent hills, mountains, lakes and forests. And there's much to explore by car. The 15th Century Aughnanure Castle, the 17th Century Ross Castle and the Glengowla lead and silver mine are all within a few miles of the village, and there are some wonderful scenic drives to discover. Travellers will be stunned by the spectacular views of the mountains from Sky Road (setting for John Wayne's 1950 film 'The Quiet Man'), the woods and Lough Corrib from Western Way, and the vistas stretching out below the Hill of Doon. Lough Corrib is a world-famous fishing centre, and it supplies the restaurants of Oughterard with delicious fresh trout and salmon. Cruises on the lough are popular with visitors, and golfers are lucky enough to have a course right on the doorstep in Oughterard.
