| 10 Places to Stay

According to an old and much-loved Irish song, visitors should not miss the chance to "see the sun go down on Galway Bay". Today's travellers can certainly enjoy this unforgettable sight from the beachside village of Furbo, which is situated on the bay's northern shore between Spiddal and Barna. Furbo offers wonderful views over the water to the rugged outlines of The Burren in County Clare, and to the Aran Islands, located in the mouth of Galway Bay. The islands are well worth a visit, either by ferry or by plane from the nearby Connemara Airport, for their fine, clean beaches and rocky cliffs, and their atmosphere of ancient history, culture and tradition. Islanders speak Gaelic as a first language - as, indeed, do many residents of Furbo. The village's principal visitor attraction is the luxury Connemara Coast Hotel, which is a major centre for conferences, also boasting spectacular views and a popular leisure centre. Furbo is an excellent base for exploring Galway City, a ten- minute drive away, and pretty coastal villages such as the neighbouring Spiddal, well known for its beaches and its crafts, with artisans making and selling everything from candles and pottery to jewellery and musical instruments.
