Clifden - the "capital" of Galway's Connemara region - is a wonderful holiday location with something for everyone. It enjoys a beautiful location amid the splendour of the 12 Bens Mountains, and it's only minutes away from the Atlantic coast where there are great beaches, good swimming and plenty of opportunities for boating, fishing and scuba diving. Connemara Golf Club has an especially scenic course within easy reach of Clifden, and other popular outdoor activities include riding, hill-walking, hiking and cycling, with bikes for hire in the town. Visitors can't fail to enjoy the awe-inspiring ocean views from the top of Sky Road, also known as The Ring of Clifden. And they will be unlucky not to chance upon some of the famous Connemara ponies, which are bred around these parts. Clifden hosts the celebrated Connemara Pony Show every August, as well as an annual Arts Week. A long-established creative centre, Clifden is filled with art galleries and fascinating craft shops selling everything from woollens to pottery and crystal glass. The town is also noted for its excellent restaurants and for a variety of friendly pubs, some traditionally Irish and others with a more contemporary appeal, with many providing live music.
