Located between Cork city and Killarney, Macroom is a small but bustling market town with a vivid historic atmosphere that's among its main attractions for visitors. The gateway and tower of the otherwise demolished Macroom Castle cast their own special character over the town, with the arch opening into a large and lovely area of parkland filled with riverside pathways that lead through stands of beautiful, mature trees. Only a few miles west is the remains of another ruined building, the five-storey tower house belonging to Carrigaphooca Castle - the "Castle on the Rock of the Fairy". A number of ancient sites are dotted around the outskirts of Macroom, among them holy wells, churches and burial circles, mounds and stones. One such formation, a dolmen, is located not far away at Bealick. Macroom has a long and bloody history of battle, although it's a peaceful, colourful and welcoming place these days, with brightly painted buildings lining the streets, a weekly farmer's market, a museum, a toy soldier factory, a theatre and concert centre, traditional music pub sessions, and an 18-hole golf course. The surrounding countryside is ideal for fishing, cycling and walking, boasting dramatic mountain scenery, the splendid eco- friendly acres of Millstreet Country Park and the geologically important Gearagh nature reserve.
