Fota Island is a small island in Cork Harbour, located a little to the north of its larger neighbour Cobh Island. Fota enjoys a sheltered climate, a colourful history and wonderful scenery, and it's home to a splendid holiday resort that's especially popular among golfers. With family accommodation including a luxury Sheraton hotel and spa, and a range of purpose-built lodges set among woodlands, visitors may spend long, relaxing days tackling the challenges of three championship courses, one of which, the Deerpark, hosted the Irish Open in 2001 and 2002. Also on Fota is a wildlife park where more than 90 different animal species roam around in open, natural surroundings and conservation is at the forefront of the operation. A more historic attraction on the island is Fora House, Arboretum and Gardens. The magnificent mansion, with its 70 rooms, neo-classical architecture and fine displays of art and furniture, was built as a hunting lodge in the 1700s, and altered and extended throughout the following century. It has recently been restored, and is open to the public along with the enchanting grounds, which contain many unusual plants and trees throughout the arboretum, walled garden and terraces. Fota is easily accessed by rail and road.
