Cobh is a colourful seaport on the south coast of Great Island - one of three islands in Cork Harbour. And some of its rich maritime history is strikingly sad. It was from Cobh that thousands of families sailed for America during the Irish Potato Famine, and for decades afterwards. This is commemorated by the waterfront statue of Annie Moore and her brothers, Annie being the first person to enter the US through the new Ellis Island immigration centre in 1892. In another sombre association, the Titanic made her last stop at Cobh before sailing on to disaster in 1912. And many victims of the Lusitania, torpedoed by the Germans, are buried in Cobh. These and other historical events are detailed at Cobh's Museum and Heritage Centre. Today's town is filled with brightly painted houses overlooked by the fine hilltop cathedral of St Colman's. The large harbour is full of activity, home to whales and dolphins as well as grand liners and yachts, which may be hired. Golf, riding and tennis, fishing and watersports are all available around Cobh. The town famously stages an annual People's Regatta as well as music festivals, and is also popular for arts, culture and good dining.
