Baltimore is a scenic fishing village in west Cork, and one of Ireland's most southerly settlements. Its backdrop of heather-clad hills and green fields rises above a coastline characterised by rocky promontories, creeks and coves. Gaily painted buildings adorn the sea front, looking out over a harbour that's filled with boats of all shapes, sizes and colours and guarded by the tall, white, stone landmark of Baltimore Beacon. Sailing is especially popular here, with pleasure cruises round the harbour, educational and sports trips, and ferries to the many picturesque, outlying islands of Roaring Water Bay. Sherkin Island is renowned for its tranquil golden beaches, secluded swimming, live music and artists' community, while the wild scenery and cliffs of Cape Clear are a bird-watcher's paradise. Boats are on hand for everything from sea angling to whale and dolphin watching, kayaking, snorkelling and scuba-diving, with lots of fascinating local shipwrecks to explore. Back on dry land, outdoor types have great opportunities for walking, golfing and horse- riding, not forgetting to relax for a while and admire the sunsets over the harbour, while the village welcomes holiday-makers to its lively pubs, excellent seafood restaurants and a busy calendar of fun- filled festivals and celebrations.
