Killaloe is a small and very pretty hillside town with a big reputation for boating and fishing. Located in the east of Clare, it enjoys a beautiful riverside location on the Shannon, which forms the county border. A fine stone bridge with 13 arches links Killaloe to Co Tipperary and the equally picturesque town of Ballina on the opposite bank. As an added attraction, Killaloe is situated at the south end of Lough Derg, one of the Shannon's great lakes, opening up endless opportunities for sailing and coarse fishing. Boats may be hired at Killaloe, which is also a popular departure point for spectacular river cruises. A little to the north, the Shannonside Activity Centre in Mountshannon offers a wide range of outdoor sports. Killaloe itself, filled with charming narrow streets, ancient buildings and monuments, and welcoming pubs, has a great historic significance, being the birthplace and ruling seat of Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland from 1002, who is celebrated every summer with a family festival of music and dancing. Visitors can learn all about the town's colourful past at the local Heritage Centre, and soak up the atmosphere with a visit to the 13th Century St Flannan's Cathedral.
