Magherafelt is a small town located in the southern tip of Co Londonderry, not too far from where the River Bann flows into the north-west corner of Lough Neagh. The proximity of the great, freshwater lake - the largest in Ireland and the UK - is a major attraction, especially for those who enjoy waterside scenery, fishing and boating. Anglers also fish for salmon and trout in the Moyola river and for pike in Lough Beg, a bird-watcher's paradise. Magherafelt is situated at the foot of the spectacular Sperrin Mountains, therefore serving as an ideal base for walkers, cyclists and drivers, with the surrounding countryside incorporating hills, valleys, forests, historic archaeological sites and breath-taking, winding roads. The town itself, built round a diamond shape, dates back to the 15th Century. It provides a multi-screen cinema and good restaurants and pubs, offering everything from traditional Irish music to contemporary karaoke. Other activities range from bingo to paintball, staged in 200 acres of local woodland, horse-riding and golf, at Moyola Park and Ronan Valley courses. Popular attractions include the nearby Castledawson Open Farm, the Horner art gallery (unforgettably located in Moyola Forest) and Bellaghy Dawn, an 18th Century fortified house now holding exhibitions, notably about Nobel Laureate poet Seamus Heaney.
