The Oxfordshire village of Yarnton sits roughly halfway between Oxford and Woodstock. The dreaming spires are only four miles southeast along the A44, but the university has a toe in the village, its splendid manor house now serving as the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies. The equally impressive – and dating back to Norman times far older - building of St Bartholomew’s Church has a Jacobean tower housing a ring of six bells, and stained-glass windows from various eras, some showing the village’s links with the Spencer family. Archaeology here has demonstrated that the Romans had a settlement in the area, and the Saxons after them, the latter arriving in the late 5th century. The church was originally a chapel of Eynsham Abbey, which held much of Yarnton before the Conquest; in the 13th century the village passed to another religious house, Rewley Abbey. There is a claim, impossible to prove, that Yarnton is the oldest village still in existence in England. Yarnton, in spite of the lovely stone walls ringing some of its buildings including the church, has a roomy, airy feel to it, the Oxford Canal and River Thame close by; that relaxed atmosphere surely not hindered by its retention of not one but two old pubs.
