Nettlebed is a village in Oxfordshire, nestled in the Chiltern Hills, located four miles from Henley-on-Thames and four miles from Wallingford. The village church, St. Bartholomew's, was rebuilt in 1846 with parts of the tower dating back to Norman times. Many of the houses in Nettlebed are listed buildings. Nettlebed's nearby clay pits helped establish a tradition of pottery making which dates back to the 9th Century. Nettlebed was the most important brick and tile making centre in the Chilterns from the mid-14th century onwards. One redundant lime burning kiln remains and is a focal point of the village. Joyce Grove, now a palliative care home, was once owned by writer Ian Fleming’s grandfather, and many of the Fleming family are buried in the local churchyard, including Ian Fleming’s brother Peter and his actress wife Celia Johnson. Archaeological finds prove the area around Nettlebed has been inhabited since palaeolithic times. Two pudding stones, until recently found outside the former Bull Hotel in the High Street, are now located near the bus shelter and are thought to be millions of years old. There were several pubs in the village at one time but today there is only the White Hart, located on the High Street.
