Dorchester-on-Thames is a village on the Thames in Oxfordshire, at the confluence of the River Thames with its tributary the River Thame, 9 miles south of Oxford. The Romans built a town here, linking it to a military camp at Alchester to the north. It was the first ecclesiastical centre of Wessex and the seat of Anglo-Saxon bishops. Dorchester Abbey is the village's parish church and a tourist attraction. In the 12th century the church was enlarged to serve a community of Augustinian canons. King Henry VIII dissolved the Abbey in 1536. Over the site of the original monastery are the Cloister Gardens and Cloister Gallery. Dorchester Abbey has a museum and tea room and is one of the finest concert venues in the district. An impressive Victorian lychgate connects the Abbey grounds to the High Street which forms the centre of the village and is framed by a variety of period buildings. Dorchester has several good places to eat and drink including The Fleur-de-Lys Inn, The George Hotel and The White Hart Hotel on the High Street and The Plough Inn on the Abingdon Road. Nearby is Day's Lock on the Thames, where the annual World Poohsticks Championship is held.
