Didcot is a town in the Thames Valley, in the county of Oxfordshire (although formerly in Berkshire). The town is located approximately 8 miles south of the city of Oxford. Historically famous as a railway town, the building of the Great Western Railway from London to the West Country sparked the growth of Didcot in the 19th century. The Didcot Railway Centre has a collection of Great Western Railway steam engines, coaches, wagons, buildings and small relics; and a recreation of Brunel's broad gauge railway. The Didcot Power Stations in nearby Sutton Courtenay supply electricity to the National Grid. Locals refer to them as "the Cathedral of the Vale" and the cooling towers are visible from up to 30 miles away. According to the Office for National Statistics, the district in England and Wales with the highest healthy life expectancy is the Ladygrove estate in Didcot. The new Orchard Centre retail development provides a diverse range of shops in the town. Cornerstone, a new purpose built arts centre, is about to open, and there is also a five-screen cinema and town square forming part of a cultural centre in Didcot. Leisure pursuits can be found at the Willowbrook Leisure Centre.
