Clanfield is a small village in Oxfordshire, 4 miles south of Carterton, and close to Black Bourton and Bampton, on the edge of the Cotswolds. There are two village pubs. The Clanfield Tavern on Bampton Road, built in 1610 and originally named The Masons Arms, and The Plough Hotel on Bourton Road. This was originally built as a farm or dower house in the 16th century, but due to its proximity to Radcot Bridge (one of the oldest crossings of the River Thames), became an inn providing accommodation for travellers. The parish church is St Stephen’s church. There is an ornate gate partway up the approach to the church. The tower of St Stephen is medieval and the nave and aisle were rebuilt in 1868. The south porch shelters a recut Norman doorway. High on the tower is a large statue of St Stephen. Nearby is Kelmscott Manor, a grade 1 Listed Tudor farmhouse adjacent to the River Thames, originally built in 1570. William Morris chose it as his summer home, signing a joint lease with the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the summer of 1871. Buscot Park is a fine example of 18th century Italianate country house, found in nearby Faringdon.
