Chilton is a village and the most southerly parish in Oxfordshire, approximately 6 miles from Didcot and near the market towns of Abingdon, Wantage and Newbury. It is most famous for the Chilton/Harwell Science and Innovation Campus that started out as The Rutherford High Energy Laboratory on the former RAF Harwell airfield between Chilton and Harwell in 1957. It is now a community of science and technology based enterprise including major national and international science projects and facilities. Over 4,500 people work on the campus in some 100 organisations covering 640 acres. Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) at the Chilton/Harwell Science Campus is a scientific research laboratory that hosts the world’s most intense neutron source. The parish church is the Church of All Saints on Church Hill. An 11th century church with a unique nine sided font. There is one pub in the village, the Rose and Crown on Main Street. The Chilton Garden Centre is on the western side of the slip road from the south of the A34. They have a small cafe serving tea, coffee, light meals and home made cakes. Other nearby attractions include: The Living Rainforest in Hampstead Norries, Didcot Railway Centre, Pendon Museum in Long Wittenham and the historic Ridgeway Walk.
