Carterton is a relatively new town in Oxfordshire and is the second largest in West Oxfordshire. It is about 5 miles west of Witney. In the 1770s the land in the northern part of the town was acquired by the Duke of Marlborough. Rock Farm was built in about 1823, with a yard in front and two matching threshing barns, one of which is now St Joseph’s Church. The present settlement dates back to the 19th century when part of the estate was sold to William Carter. Carterton grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to RAF Brize Norton airbase, the largest employer in the area and the main RAF transport base in the country. There are many shops within the town centre, including 2 supermarkets, and there is a market every Thursday. The town has a varied mix of housing, some of which belongs to the MOD. It has a leisure centre with a 25m swimming pool, children's pool and a fitness suite. A new north eastern district of the town has been built, together with a new primary school, and work has begun to build a local shopping centre. There are two pubs within the town, The Beehive and Ye Olde Aviator.
