Burford is a town in Oxfordshire, often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’. Its High Street is overlooked by 17th and 18th century Cotswold stone buildings, and slopes down to a bridge crossing the River Windrush. The Tudor house, Tolsey Hall, is located on the corner of Sheep Street, a reminder of the importance the wool trade once had in the area. Burford has a selection of mostly small, independent shops, including numerous antique shops and art galleries. The town also has its own golf course, separated by the A361, with 9 holes on each side. There are many hotels, restaurants and public houses in the town including: The Cotswold Gateway, The Lamb Inn, The Bay Tree, The Highway, The Royal Oak, The Mermaid, The Angel, The Cotswold Arms, The Golden Pheasant, The Bull, The Aziz and The Dragon Inn. The unusual church of St John is off the High Street. Originally Norman, it was remodelled in the fifteenth century and houses a Renaissance monument to Henry VIII’s barber and surgeon, alongside a Native American Indian memorial. The Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens in Burford is set around a Listed Victorian manor house and has a wide variety of animals in landscaped surroundings. There is also a narrow-gauge railway.
