Brize Norton lies to the east of Carterton in Oxfordshire. Since the 1930s its name has become widely known because of the local airbase which was named after Brize Norton village, although its main buildings are in the neighbouring parish. The parish church dates from the 12th Century. By the mid 16th Century it was dedicated to St Peter but is now dedicated to St Brise. An ex Army hut was erected in the village in 1921 known as the Victory Hut. A new hall, the Elderbank Hall, replaced this as the village community centre and is used for a wide range of activities. There are two pubs in the village. The Masons Arms on the Burford Road, and The Chequers opposite the Recreation Ground on Station Road. RAF Brize Norton is the largest station in the Royal Air Force, employing some 3900 service personnel and over 600 civilians. It is the main airport used for deploying UK troops worldwide and to project air transport and air-to-air refuelling. From the road at the end of the runway it is possible to watch the large planes coming in to land. Brize Norton is approximately 4 miles from both Burford and Witney.
