Bampton also known as "Bampton-in-the-bush" is a village and civil parish in West Oxfordshire. Bampton's parish church, St Mary the Virgin, dates back to the 12th century. It has a 13th-century spire and carved stone reredos of Christ and the apostles that date from the 14th century. Bampton is famous for its 'Society for the Preservation of Ancient Junketing' (SPAJERS), which involves the annual Great Shirt Race run on Whitsun Bank Holiday Monday around the village, celebrating the 14 pubs that used to be open. Runners are dressed in night-gowns and have to be in pairs, with one pushing another in a trolley, stopping at the houses that used to be pubs (as well as the current open pubs), to drink a measure of beer before running onto the next. Bampton had 14 pubs at one time, but now there are just 4 - The Horseshoe, The Romany, The Talbot and The Morris Clown. As well as a variety of independent shops and retailers, Bampton has a post office, bank, library, five function facilities, a sports ground and pavilion, and a market square with a town hall built in 1838 that houses an art gallery on the first floor. The thriving market town of Witney is 6 miles to the north
