Always a charming coastal town, Holywood has recently become one of Northern Ireland's most fashionable - and affluent - locations. Situated between Belfast and Bangor, Holywood was home to the rich and the grand of the 1800s. Now, after many quiet decades, it's back on the map as a centre for arts, crafts, galleries, specialty shops, chic boutiques, fine dining and funky cafés. But the traditional appeal of the town is unaltered. It stands at the beginning of the scenic, 16-mile North Down Coastal Path, which winds eastwards to Portavoe. One of the great pleasures of Holywood is to sit back in a waterfront pub watching boats sailing in and out of Belfast Lough with the Antrim Hills rising beyond. The age-old tradition of dancing round the town-centre Maypole is still observed at the annual May Day fair, and the nearby Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, set in many acres of countryside, authentically recreates the lives and times of people living in the early 1900s, while a Norman motte and a priory with ruins dating back to the 13th Century bear testament to a much earlier history. Nature-lovers, meanwhile, will enjoy the parkland, woodland and hillside forests in and around Holywood.
