Located to the south west of Belfast and Lisburn, Hillsborough is a large, attractive village with a fascinating air of history. It's distinguished by a variety of excellent Georgian buildings including Hillsborough Castle, an imposing late-18th Century mansion of international interest. Once the seat of the Hill family, it's now the official residence of the Royal Family and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when they visit. The castle also hosted important political discussions that paved the way for peace in Northern Ireland, and opened its doors to Presidents Clinton and Bush, meeting with former PM Tony Blair. Visitors may tour the castle and grounds, which contain Europe's biggest rhododendron bush. Hillsborough is noteworthy, too, for its 500-acre Forest Park including a lake, a wildlife sanctuary and a 17th Century fort. Not quite so old is the parish church of St Malachy. Built in the late 1700s in Gothic Revival style, this exceptional building can be seen from miles around with a spire rising to more than 200 feet. A former market village now primarily acting as a home for commuters, Hillsborough has many friendly pubs and attracts people from all over the world to its annual Oyster Festival.
