The picturesque village of Crawfordsburn has two big claims to fame. One is its beautiful and historic Old Inn - crowned Hotel Of The Year at the 2007 Northern Ireland Tourism Awards. Built in 1614 and still partly thatched, it's said to be Ireland's oldest coaching inn. The other great attraction is Crawfordsburn Country Park, which takes in more than two miles of dramatic coastline and includes wildflower meadows, a wooded glen, a waterfall, an Education Centre with all kinds of revelations about the local wildlife, and Grey Point Fort, a wartime relic that commands inspiring views over Belfast Lough. From Crawfordsburn beach, there's a lovely walk along the coastal path to Stricklands Glen, with its stream, ponds and waterfalls, and onward to the bustling resort of Bangor. Situated on the southern shores of Belfast Lough, Crawfordsburn is an excellent base for exploring some of the other pleasures of the North Down Coast. An eastward journey past Bangor takes in Ballyholme, with its mile-long beach, and Groomsport. Here, bird-watchers will enjoy Ballymacormick Point Nature Reserve and fans of history can absorb the authentic atmosphere of 1910 at Cockle Row Cottages, where local crafts and heritage information are displayed to visitors.
