Burray is a small Orkney island which forms part of the archipelago ring of islands around the Scapa Flow in Scotland; it is situated with the Mainland of Orkney and the Holm Sound to the north, the island of South Ronaldsay and the Water Sound to the south and the island Hunda and the Hunda Sound to the west. Following the sinking of the ship HMS Royal Oak during WWII, the Churchill Barrier Causeways were built to prevent German U-boats entering the Scapa Flow; these barriers connect Burray to Mainland Orkney, South Ronaldsay and the smaller islets Lamb Holm and Glimps Holm. The island is surrounded by picturesque scenery and has an abundance of wildlife, Burray has a beautiful Bay in the north-west and a long golden sand beach, this is a popular tourist destination ideal for out-door enthusiasts and nature-watchers; it has a hotel and holiday accommodation, shops and amenities. Historically interesting features include the ruins of a prehistoric Broch at Northfield and the remains of St Lawrence Church. The Fossil and Heritage Centre has displays of fossils, Orkney heritage and local history, a café and gift shop. There is a Diving Centre for boat-charter, fishing and diving and a Bird sanctuary at Ness on the east of the island with a large colony of breeding sea-birds including puffins, razorbills and guillemots.
