Lerwick is the most northerly town of the British Isles and the capital of the Shetland Islands in Scotland; it is situated on a natural harbour on the Mainland of Shetland with the island of Bressay to the east. The area has evidence of settlers dating back to the Bronze Age with the ruins of Clickmin Broch on the edge of Lerwick. The town developed in the 17th century as a fishing base for the Dutch herring fishermen, in 1655 Fort Charlotte was built by Cromwell over looking the harbour to oust the Dutch from Lerwick while Holland was at war with England. Lerwick continued to be a major fishing port into the1900’s. The town is still centred round its busy harbour with the regular Bressay Ferry service, cruise-liners and yachts bringing a vast amount of tourists to this popular location. It is well-known for the ‘Up-Helly-Aa’ Viking Fire Festival held on the last Tuesday of January each year, celebrations include burning a replica long-ship, a procession carrying lighted torches dressing as Vikings and having an all-night party. Lerwick has hotels, B&B’s, hostels, shops, cafés, restaurants and a nightclub. There is fitness and leisure-centre, swimming-pool, a community centre and museums with collections of Shetlands heritage and crafts. Historically interesting features include the County Buildings (1875) and the Town Hall (1882).
