Doune is one of the small villages along with Kirvick, Knock, Dalmore, Borrowston Garenin, Upper Carloway and Park Carloway that make up the district of Carloway on the west-side of the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland, situated at the head of Loch Carloway 15 miles north-west of Stornoway. The area has a strong Norse and Celtic history although there is evidence of settlers dating back 5000 years. Historic landmarks include the Neolithic ‘Clach na Tursa’ Standing Stone, the Pictish Doune Broch, the Iron-Age Dun Carloway and nearby the well-known Callanish Standing Stones; arranged in the shape of a cross, they pre-date Stonehenge and the pyramids in Egypt, The Callanish Visitor Centre tells the story of the stones. The Garenin Blackhouse village and centre has examples of the ‘Blackhouses’ with thatched roofs and peat insulating the dry stone walls. The pier was built in 1892 and village developed with its fishing and crofting industries. Tourism is currently a main industry attracting visitors with the picturesque scenery, beautiful beaches, hills and mountains and an abundance of wildlife, the tranquil village is a popular holiday destination with hotel and holiday accommodation, places to eat out, shops and amenities, a football pitch, a community centre and children’s play area. Activities include coastal walks, cycling, fishing, sea-kayaking, surfing and choices of boat-trips operating tours to explore Lewis and Harris
