Only about a mile from the junction of the A1 at Stretton, situated in picturesque rural Rutland is the village of Clipsham. The village, although small, is famous for the stone from the nearby Clipsham Quarry. Clipsham Stone has been used for many famous buildings including Kings College Chapel at Cambridge, York Minster and for repairs to the Houses of Parliament. The limestone quarry is part of the Upper Lincolnshire Limestone Formation. During the 19th century, Amos Alexander was head forester at the Clipsham Estate. In 1870 he started a hobby of clipping the yew trees that grew outside his home to create figures. The squire was so impressed that Amos was told to cut figures on all of the trees along the carriage drive to Clipsham Hall, depicting items of local interest and family events. Thus, the Yew Tree Avenue was born and it can still be seen with more designs than ever before. Some of the 150 clipped Yews are over 200 years old! If you are looking for refreshment you will find The Red Lion Inn and The Olive Branch in the village. The Olive Branch is one of the few pubs to receive a Michelin Star and was voted Michelin Pub of the Year in 2008
