The small village of Braunston-in-Rutland stands on high ground near the River Gwash, about four miles south-west of the lovely old Rutland market town of Oakham, the village bordering Leicestershire on its western boundary. It is found down little lanes that as well as Oakham connect it to the A47, the A6003, and more distantly the B6047. Many of the settlement’s cottages and houses are built of local stone or mellow brick, some of these buildings dating from the early 17th century, Quaintree Hall perhaps slightly earlier. Of far earlier date, in fact begun in the 12th century, is the village church of All Saints, a pleasing structure in its circular churchyard that like most village churches has been added to and altered through the centuries. One such project in 1920 unearthed a fascinating artefact, the so-called Braunston Goddess, an evidently ancient figure that has been suggested as a Celtic piece, though to untutored eyes it has an almost African style. Though the population is below the 400 mark, Braunston supports two pubs: The Blue Ball is a pretty 17th century building of whitewashed walls and thatched roof; The Old Plough is of warm brick.
