Rushden, Travel Britain
Rushden is the largest town in East Northamptonshire and the fifth largest town in the county of Northamptonshire. It is located in the south of the district. Archaeological evidence of settlements in the Rushden area go back to the Iron Age and Roman periods. The origins of the town itself probably date back to the Saxons, who had a place of worship here. In 1085 was one of the entries in the Doomsday Book. The Normans called the place 'Risdene' and built a church there. The present church dates from the 13th Century. Rushden Hall has its origins in the 14th Century, but is mostly of a later date. The Hall is now the offices of Rushden Town Council.
Rushden's prosperity resulted from a number of industries, including lace making and farming, although the shoe making industry was responsible for the largest growth in the town. In the industry's heyday there were well over 100 boot and shoe factories in Rushden.
The town's football club, Rushden Town merged with nearby Irthlingborough Diamonds in 1992 to become Rushden & Diamonds. Since then they have been one of the most successful 'Non League' Football teams, competing consistently at the top of the Football Conference.
