Fort William, Travel Britain
Fort William is a picturesque town situated at the head of Loch Linnhe and is the largest town in the west highlands of Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Fort William is a major tourist centre, popular with walkers; climbers, skiers, cyclists and sight-seers, there are many hotels and holiday accommodation.
Fort William is in close proximity of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles and Glen Nevis with spectacular scenery. Fort William marks the end of the West Highland Way; a well-known footpath that stretches 92 miles across the Scottish Highlands, it also marks the entrance to the Great Glen with the Great Glen Way, a famous cycle way from Inverness to Fort William and the downhill Mountain Bike Track. Glencoe lies to the south and Glenfinnan to the west with routes heading off to the Isles including Skye. Nearby is the Aonach More Ski Centre.
Historically Inverlochy was the main settlement with a Fort built in1654; it was then moved and extended in 1690. The Fort was called Fort William after William of Orange and held out against the Jacobite uprising.
The West Highland Museum, Cameron Square, has a collection of local history including a helmet worn by Marquis of Montrose at the Battle of Inverlochy.
